Malaga Island: Discovering Maine’s African American History

Details: This third annual event planned in partnership with Maine Coast Heritage Trust, USM, Center for African Heritage, Maine Freedom Trails and Maine Historical Society will focus on the lives of the families with an examination of the impact of race, class and eugenics movement. Cool Art 2008: Ice Carving

Where: Monument Square, Portland

Time: 9:30-11am

Details: "Portland Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with Waynflete School, is pleased to announce the annual, outdoor, winter snow sculpture project entitled “Cool Art 2008.” Students enrolled in art classes at Waynflete will carve snow sculptures at Monument Square (snow and weather permitting of course). Students will be using spades, trowels, hand saws (and kitchen utensils) to carve out 10 abstract sculptures (refrigerator size and dryer size snow sculptures).

We invite the public to watch the artists create their cool art and to view the finished pieces on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The sculptures will stay up until it starts warming up!" For more information on Cool Art 2008, please call the Portland Parks and Recreation Office: 756-8275.

Details: The Lewis Gallery hosts monthly exhibits of established and emerging artists from Maine and New England. Drawings, paintings, photography, tapestries, weavings, book arts and sculpture are among the media shown in recent months. The Gallery is located in the lower level of the Portland Public.

 

Bates College Museum of Art

Exhibit: Taking Different Trails: The Artists’ Journey to Katahdin Lake.

Where: 75 Russell Street, Lewiston

Cost: Free

Details: This exhibit will be filled with scenes of and from Katahdin Lake, known for its views of Maine’s tallest mountain, by artists who took part in a historic public-private effort to preserve nearly 7,000 acres of land including the lake and the old-growth forests around it. Open January 18th – March 4th.

Exhibit: Wildness Within, Wildness Without: Exploring Maine’s Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail

Where: 75 Russell Street, Lewiston

Open Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00a – 5:00p

Cost: Free

Details: This exhibit will be filled with images by nationally known photographer Bridget Besaw depict locations along the Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail, tracing Henry David Thoreau’s three Maine treks, which followed ancient Native American canoe routes through the wilderness.. Open January 18th – May 24th.
