Details: This event is part of a series of music listening groups led by Director of the USM School of Music Scott Harris. Join the Portland Symphony Orchestra, USM School of Music and the Portland Public Library for four free programs in a series of interactive and insightful discussions centered on listening to CDs of symphonic music taken from upcoming PSO concerts and beyond. Scott is joined by special guests to talk about what people hear when we take a peek behind the compositions and discover the fun in classical music. Maine Jewish Film Festival’s Sixth Annual Holocaust Day

Picnic and Kite Flying Competition

Details: Cumberland County Activities Committee wwill host a Memorial Weekend BBQ and Kite Flying Competition. Each house planning on attending needs to RSVP to Leanne Morgan by May 9th and will be expected to bring a specific items for the bbq. Leanne will be assigning an item or will give you a choice. Please RSVP with what item you would like to bring by May 16th. Items will be determined on a first come first serve basis. At the event we will eat great food and enjoy the outdoors with games and a kite flying competition. Be on the lookout for more information on this fun event!

Lewis Gallery Exhibits
Exhibit: Immigrants on the Waterfront - Photographs by Nancy Angela Ciocca

Details: The Lewis Gallery hosts monthly exhibits of established and emerging artists from Maine and New England. Drawings, paintings, photography, tapestries, weavings, book arts and sculpture are among the media shown in recent months. The Gallery is located in the lower level of the Portland Public.

Details: Seven graduating studio art majors show work from their year-long thesis projects, in a program that emphasizes creating a cohesive body of work through sustained studio practice and critical inquiry. Exhibit: Wildness Within, Wildness Without: Exploring Maine’s Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail

Details: This exhibit will be filled with images by nationally known photographer Bridget Besaw depict locations along the Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail, tracing Henry David Thoreau’s three Maine treks, which followed ancient Native American canoe routes through the wilderness.. Exhibit: The Kimono and Traditional Japanese Culture: Investigating Kimono through Ukiyo-e in the Bates College Art Museum Collection

Details: For this entry in the museum’s Students in the Vault series, Hisa Abe ’08 has assembled woodblock prints in the “Ukiyo-e” genre that highlight the roles, variety and importance of kimono patterns in these widely distributed scenes of popular culture. Open April 4th – July 19th .
