Businesses Recognized at 2008 Creative Work Systems Spring Fling

A festive crowd of close to 200 people gathered for the 27th Annual CWS Spring Fling on April 12. The event included dinner, dancing, a silent auction and the presentation of the annual employer awards. Three employers were recognized this year for consistently recognizing the valuable contribution each person can make if given the chance: Whole Foods Market in Portland; Wal-Mart in Auburn; and the Northern York County Family YMCA in Biddeford.

Whole Foods Market of Portland received the award for Cumberland County Employer of the Year. Since opening in 2007, they have ensured that “diversity” in their food products was equaled by “diversity” in their employment team. Store Manager, Marissa Perry and Admin Team Leader, Greg Pope were on hand to accept the award, along with Matt Dunham who has worked there since the store opened.

CWS has been fortunate to work with Wal-Mart in Auburn for over ten years and was pleased to name them Employer of the Year for the Five County Region. Over the past decade, Wal-Mart has been a positive presence in the community, showing outstanding support for individuals living with disabilities. Personal Manager, Irma McGuinness accepted the award at the spring Fling.

The Northern York County Family YMCA in Biddeford was recognized as Employer of the Year for York County. The YMCA lives out their mission, “developing a healthy mind, body and spirit for all”, including their employees. Becky Harkema, Executive Director, and Ron Dion, Facility Manager accepted the award and shared in the festivities of the Spring Fling.

Pauline Roy, Spring Fling founder, told the crowd that she is so happy to see the tradition of recognizing employers continue year after year. In a conversation before the event she remarked that employment is so important and that it really is a “win-win if you can help people help themselves.”

The awards were followed by dancing, bidding on silent auction items and a raffle. Special thanks to all of our generous supporters who made this event a success. All event proceeds benefit Creative Work Systems.
